Portrait of Vince Mars/Marionet-X

Here we go!!!
Another painting done :D

Its been months that I’m thinking of doing a huge painting.
The reason why I didn’t started it yet is simply that I was wondering HOW I could save time by painting the black background with all those details. My answer : using black gesso canvas.

Before starting the whole thing, I wanted to test it out first but I didn’t have the appropriate picture to paint.
One night my friend Sebastien (music photographer) post a picture of Vince Mars  (singer – Marionet-X). The picture was amazing. He was in the dark, you could see only a part of him. Strong light, emotion, colors.. everything was perfect. The PERFECT picture to paint on black. I asked Sebastien if he would allow me to paint it and I started right away.

It’s different to paint on black gesso compare to white. You see the results right away since the background is “already there”. Yes you’re going to say “on white canvas, paint your background first and then work on the portrait”.. well I could but it’s easier for me to start the portrait first and then.. finish with the background. It was really fun to see the painting take shape as soon I was done with a part.

Here’s the final results

I really really enjoy working on a black canvas. More expensive but sooooo worth it.

I would like to thank my friend Sebastien Tacheron for let me use his picture to paint.
He is an amazing music photographer.

This is GORGEOUS! I love dark to light art!

I’ve pondered using black gesso on occasion, but have never made the leap. It would certainly streamline things. Mayhap I will give it a shot now.

    Once again, excellent work!
